ENCYON

Collaborative project

Skärgårdskraft

Battery power instead of diesel generators for contracting work in the Swedish archipelago. A collaboration between Encyon, ABC and Damax, funded by Vinnova.

The problem

Renovation, construction and maintenance work on islands and coastal sites largely runs on diesel generators, because the grid connection is weak or absent. That means noise, emissions and fuel transport in exactly the environments least able to absorb them.

Electrification of the contracting sector has so far been built for large urban construction sites. The available solutions hold 200 to 500 kWh, weigh several tonnes and assume a lorry delivering to a fixed site. Small and medium-sized contractors in the archipelago are left out, even though their working environment carries some of the strictest noise and environmental requirements in the country.

What the project builds

Skärgårdskraft develops and validates a portable battery unit in the 20 to 60 kWh range, the size the market is missing. It has to reach an island by trailer, ferry or ordinary material transport, without special vehicles or crane lifts, and run tools, lighting, pumps and compressors through a working day.

Alongside the hardware sits a digital platform for booking, tracking, operating data and cost follow-up, built to work even when connectivity is patchy. Around that, a service package with delivery, support and insurance, so the solution can be used without a large investment.

Logistics is a development task in its own right, not a detail. A battery carries considerably less energy per kilo than diesel, which makes rotation between units, recharging and coordination with existing material flows a central part of the solution.

Encyon's role

Encyon coordinates the project and is responsible for business model development, customer validation and the digital platform.

Partners

Encyon AB
Coordinator. Digital platform, business model, customer validation.
ABC
Battery technology. Adapting existing battery systems to a portable format for archipelago conditions.Named once the partner has announced the project themselves.
Damax AB
Pilot user. An established archipelago and general contractor running the project's live test environment.

By the end of the project

A demonstrator in operation at Damax with at least six months of documented use in archipelago conditions, a digital platform in production, a business model validated against real usage, and a plan for scaling the solution to more coastal and archipelago regions.
